Science Communication and other Writings

My first year as an Assistant Professor was exciting and full of new opportunities. But I was simultaneously dealing with overcoming some very personal obstacles regarding fertility and pregnancy loss. I wrote an article for the Working Life column in Science about how difficult it can be to be dealing with these personal, medical issues as an early career scientist. My goal in writing this article is to normalize these types of conversations. Fertility/infertility and miscarriage are not dirty words and shouldn’t bring shame. These topics should not be taboo and anyone who wants to talk about their journeys should be able to. Please reach out if you would like to talk about these topics!

During the 2018-2019 academic year I participated in a virtual mentoring program through the American Geophysical Union for early career scientists. I admit, I was skeptical at first. Could a monthly, virtual, group meeting make a difference? Spoiler alert: Yes! It was wonderful to learn from and chat with my mentors and e-meet early career scientists from around the country. I co-authored an Eos article about the value of early career mentoring.

Celestial Police is a short story that I wrote for Further Tales from Spaceship Earth. The story is about an impending asteroid strike (this is fiction!) that will destroy Earth and how the government decided to censor all data to avoid depressing society in an effort to lower anxiety. FYI: this was written prior to the 2016 election. You can find the short story compilation on amazon, proceeds support the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science.

Make it Work Series

Logan Brenner

I wrote a series of posts for Columbia University's State of the Planet Blog about my experiences at the Make it Work student simulation of the 2015 United Nations Conference of Parties, which discussed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
